Learning to read is a vital key skill that supports all future learning, and it is important that phonics lessons are of a high quality. At St. Michael's we teach phonics in EYFS and Year 1 by using the nationally recognised Read Write Inc scheme, developed by Ruth Miskin. Read Write Inc is validated by the Department for Education as a complete synthetic phonics programme.

Children have a fun-packed, interactive session of phonics each morning before moving on to their writing. All staff in Early Years and Reception are trained to deliver the programme.
